Even though I'm almost finished reading And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini (he wrote The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns) and even though I am totally captivated by the book since this author is an amazing story teller, I was helping a student pick a book the other day and looked at the back cover of The Raft. It was a Friday afternoon so I decided to take it home, just in case I finished Hosseini's novel (which I didn't), but I nevertheless picked up The Raft and could not put it down. I can see why it is one of this year's Iowa Teen Award winners. This adventure story chronicles a most frightening escapade at sea by a resourceful, eco-minded teen adrift in a rubber raft. She lives on Midway Island with her parents who are biologists, so she has knowledge and appreciation for animals and the environment. She also knows enough about Tiger sharks to be concerned about her situation! This is a fast paced, nail-biter you won't want to miss. There are two copies at the OMS library. Check it out!
